Bearly Legal

On October 20, 2011 detectives issued an investigation on a shooting misfire that happened while on a hunting trip.

The Vermont State Police and game warden from the Vermont of Fish and Game joined together to figure out how this hunting trip went awry. As the investigation continued, officials learned that Conrad Masse, age 76, of Craftsbury and Wayne Goff, age 58 of Wolcott had been bear hunting together.

These two men had been using a GPS to track two bear hounds that they had released on the trail of the bear. When the bear and hound had met paths, Goff stepped out of the truck and attempted to get in front of the bear.

When the bear finally crossed the road, it crossed in-between Masse and Goff. Masse opened fire with a Remington .30-60 rifle and fired at least three shots.

Only one of Masse's shots were successful in striking the bear. Another shot hit a nearby tree and the last shot hit Goff, striking him in the pelvic area.

Goff was transported to a near by hospital immediately.

Masse was charged with Aggravated Assault and issued tickets for shooting for the road.
